Ireland is set to legalise gay marriage after early results suggested the country had voted overwhelmingly for allowing same-sex unions. Celebrations spilled out into Dublin city centre as it started to become clear that the campaign to extend the right to marry to same-sex couples will succeed following the historic referendum.
An official declaration is not due for at least another hour, but anti-gay marriage campaigners have already conceded defeat. Results are beginning to come in, with the first four suggesting that at least 60 per cent voted for gay marriage.
People across Ireland turned out to vote in the referendum, including newlyweds Ann Cole and Vincent Fox (top right) who dropped into a Dublin polling station just hours after getting married themselves.
