The world's largest refugee camp DADAAB is closing — may cause displacement of 600,000 people

Kenya plans to close all of its refugee camps in a move that would displace more than 600,000 people.

 

The country's government said it was shutting down the camps due to “very heavy” economic, security and environmental issues. Those due to close include Dadaab, the largest refugee camp in the world, home to more than 300,000 people on the Kenya-Somalia border.

Knife-wielding man launch at children outside a primary school in China before killing himself

 

A knife-wielding assailant hacked children at playground in a Chinese school on Monday, February 29, before killing himself. The incident took place in Haikou, in the southern island province of Hainan, as school pupils were lining up to go home at the end of the morning session.

 

According to China News Service, the man struck, slashed at several children before fleeing. A woman passerby saw several children with their faces covered in blood, apparently from head injuries, being bandaged up.

 

The victims were six boys and four girls, the report said. They were severely wounded but not in life-threatening condition.

Australian woman suffered frostbite injuries after she fell asleep drunk outside a bar in Canada

The unidentified woman, who shared photos of her painful injuries on imgur, admits she was 'f***ing stupid' following the drunken incident in December at Prince Albert in Saskatchewan, Canada. The woman, who lived in NSW but moved to Canada four years ago, says she was 'blackout drunk' when she lost her friends and was last seen at a bar about 2.30am (bottom right).

She was found outside a nursing home curled in a ball trying to sleep three hours later and her fingers were already notably purple. She was treated in hospital and was told her fingers would have to blister and swell before they could be popped (right). Her hands are in the process of healing and she can use them again, but her specialist is still concerned about her left pinky and right middle fingertip.

US VP Joe Biden Has Phone Call With Pres. Jonathan & Buhari

 

 

Vice-president of the United States, Joe Biden, recently had a phone call with President Goodluck Jonathan and APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari respectively.

 

According to Punch, the US embassy, verified that the phone call occurred, via a statement issued by the US embassy in Nigeria.

 

Here is an excerpt from the statement:

 

“The Vice President further expressed the United States’ support for the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission and its work to deliver free, fair, and credible elections, in part through its essential efforts to distribute Permanent Voter Cards and help ensure that electronic voter card readers are in place and fully operational.”

100-yr old woman released from jail in Kenya

100 year-old Margaret Ngima has been released from prison in Kenya after she was jailed for contempt of court after failing to pay a fine of 100,000 Kenyan shillings (about N216,000), BBC reports.

 

The great-grandmother's jailing at Embu prison last week, triggered a national outrage and campaign for her release, with her fine eventually paid for by Nairobi senator Mike Sonko.

 

She was accused of ignoring a court order in a land dispute with another family.

The senator also reportedly sent what he described as a "rescue squad" to secure her release.

Morocco Accuses Nigeria of Using King Mohammed VI as Election Tool

Morocco has withdrawn its ambassador from Nigeria after accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of using King Mohammed VI as an election campaign tool.

 

According to BBC, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that Jonathan had spoken to the king over the phone. However, Morocco’s foreign ministry has denied that the phone call ever happened, and accused the Nigerian government of trying to use the king to gain favour with Muslim voters.

 

In a statement released on Sunday,  Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry denied reports that President Jonathan had been snubbed by King Mohammed. “This information is absolutely not correct as the president did in fact speak to the Moroccan monarch… both leaders spoke extensively over the phone on matters of mutual interest and concern,” the statement read in part.
