The Federal Government has removed subsidy on petrol, as the product will now sell for N145 per litre, Vanguard reports.

 

The fuel subsidy removal was announced on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

The government had hinted on Tuesday, May 10, that it would announce new policy on fuel subsidy today.

 

While preparing Nigerians for the hardship ahead, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had said that the government would have to take tough decisions on the desirability of retaining fuel subsidies, adding that it had become necessary to remove them.

 

“No matter how we slice it, we are in economic times that are challenging, but they provide us with some of the best opportunities for making a real difference in our economic life.

“I think that we are at a point that a lot has been said about subsidies and what to do with subsidies. I think we are at a point where we must make many difficult decisions and make very tough choices.

 

“But I think the Nigerian people are prepared for all what is required and all it would take to make a real difference," Osinbajo, who spoke at the third Ogun State Investors’ Forum held in Abeokuta on Tuesday, said.

Buhari Dismisses Cameron’s Remark Describing Nigeria as ‘Fantastically Corrupt'

President Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed the remark made by the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, who in a conversation with Queen Elizabeth II described Nigeria and Afghanistan as “fantastically corrupt”.

Buhari, who departed for the United Kingdom yesterday to attend a global summit on anti-corruption, said the British PM’s unguarded remark was not reflective of his administration’s fight against corruption.

 

A statement by the president’s media aide, Mr. Garba Shehu, said: “It is certainly not reflective of the good work that the president is doing. The eyes of the world are on what is happening here.

“The Prime Minister must be looking at an old snapshot of Nigeria. Things are changing with corruption and everything else.

After days of surveillance at his hideout, RRS operatives this afternoon picked up Lekan Shonde, the man who allegedly beat his wife, Ronke Shonde, to death at their home in Lagos last week. He was arrested at his hideout in Ikeja, Lagos state. The RRS command tracked him to a location in Ikeja on Saturday and then mobilized to pick him up.

Nigerian woman, Florence Eshalomi is Elected as the London Assembly member for Lambeth and Southwark

 

Florence Eshalomi (nee Nosegbe) has been confirmed as a newly elected member of the London Assemby after a convincing victory over her political opponents.

According to the official account for the London Labour Congress, the Lambeth Labour Cllr polled an impressive 96,946 votes across the two boroughs. Conservative Robert Flint came second with 34,703.

 

The 35-year-old mother of one celebrated the good news with her twitter followers, writing: "Feeling proud 2 be elected Assembly Member 4 Lambeth and Southwark. Thank you 2 all 4 voting and 2 the fab campaign team. Now let's turn City Hall Red!"

Commonwealth appoints Gov. Ambode VP of Enterprise and Investment Council

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has been appointed as the Vice President of Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), an interest group established to promote trade and investment by facilitating engagement between Government and the private sector throughout the Commonwealth.
Chief Executive Officer of CWEIC, Oliver Everett, who stated this while meeting with a group of Nigerian businessmen at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, said Governor Ambode would be in office alongside Rt. Hon Jeffrey Mountevans, the Lord Mayor of the City of London as co-Vice President of the Council for the next one year, subject to renewal for another year.

Everett, who was in Nigeria to talk to small business owners on investment opportunities in Commonwealth nations, especially in Europe, said the appointment of Governor Ambode was a major pointer to the fact that Nigeria and indeed Lagos is open for real and serious investment.

Lagos husband who allegedly killed his wife and mother of his 2 children, Ronke Shonde in Lagos on Friday, has given his side of the story while in hiding.

 

Lekan Shonde spoke to PUNCH Metro over the phone line provided by his in-law, Bolatito, which was confirmed by the police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos. Mr. Shonde told Punch correspondent that his wife, Ronke provoked him on Thursday when she described how her lover slept with her in a hotel in Abuja on Thursday night.
Lekan, a depot worker in the Apapa area of Lagos State, said his wife of eight years changed after she allegedly started dating the general manager of a publishing company she worked for.XX 

 

He said his late mother had warned him against marrying Ronke but he ignored his mother's warnings and still married Ronke, a decision he regrets.

When Teebillz shared his suicide note this morning on IG while pouring his heart out about the demise of his marriage to Tiwa Savage, many of us thought/hoped he was just talking, but he wasn't. Tunji 'Teebillz' Balogun tried to commit suicide this morning by jumping off the Lekki- Ikoyi toll bridge and this is fact!

According to an eye-witness named Chukwuma Ani, who witnessed the incident and was one of the men who pulled Teebillz off the bridge, he told LIB exclusively that around past 9 this morning while driving on the Lekki-Ikoyi toll bridgAe, a car hit his own from behind, damaging his car. He said he came out of the car and approached the driver of the vehicle that hit his. He didn't know who the man was (it was Teebillz) but he said he berated him for hitting his car and asked the man to come out and assess the damage caused to his car. The man looked at him and told him to leave...that he was there for a reason. That he was planning to commit suicide and Chukwuma Ani would hear about it later...

While addressing the crowd, she stated that President Goodluck Jonathan is the Messiah, and that Nigerian women should vote for him Punch reports.

 

“Nigerian women, if they (APC) come, tell them that your mother said you should not listen to them. They have nothing to offer. They have nothing to give you, Nigerian women; because the battle has already been conquered, God has opened the way for us. God has brought down the messiah for us. And PDP is the messiah. Goodluck is the messiah,” she said.

NIS Recruitment Tragedy: Pres. Jonathan Offers N75 Million & 35 Jobs to 15 Bereaved Families

President Goodluck Jonathan has offered 35 jobs and N75 million to 15 families whose relatives died in the tragic Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise on March 15, 2014.
 

Jonathan made the announcement at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Guardian reports.

 

Each of the families were given N5 million cheques each, and a total of 35 employment letters were given to members of the families.

 

Speaking afterwards, Jonathan promised that the tragic NIS recruitment tragedy would never happen again. “This will be the last of such things,” he said.

Court rules against AIT, NTA from airing any documentaries against Prof. Osinbajo

Still on election, the Federal High Court has issued a rule that stops the management of AIT and NTA from airing any damaging documentary on the Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. 

 

Following Prof Osinbajo  law suit on March 10th seeking an order restraining the TV stations under the control of NBC from a violation of his 'right to dignity. right to privacy, and right to life'.

Today, Justice John Tsoho ordered the broadcasting companies to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the applicant’s motion on notice for interlocutory injunction. NBC was also joined as respondents in the suit. The matter has been adjourned to March 13th for further hearing.

Pastor pleads with court to dissolve marriage after wife cheated on him with another Pastor

A Lagos-based pastor, John Ajayi, on Tuesday pleaded with an Orile Agege Customary Court to dissolve his marriage as a result of his wife’s alleged adultery and desertion.

 

Ajayi, 49, told the court that his wife, had an affair with his pastor-friend whom he invited for a church programme, Daily Independent reports. According to him, his wife subsequently left their matrimonial home since 2011 and has not returned.

 

Giving his account, Ajayi stated:

“When my pastor-friend came to Lagos on my invitation for our church programme, I noticed how my wife was admiring him which made me to suspect a foul play. After the pastor had returned to his base in Ibadan, my wife was nowhere to be found in Lagos, so I traced her to Ibadan and met her with the pastor.
