Six women and three men were shot dead, allegedly by Dylann Roof, 21 (TOP LEFT INSET), during a bible study meeting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston at 9pm on Wednesday.
The innocent victims who welcomed Roof into the session were (top row, left to right) Reverend Sharonda Singleton, a 45-year-old mother of three and a track coach; library worker Cynthia Hurd, 54, who worked for the community for 31 years; Reverend Clementa Pinckney, pastor of the church and a South Carolina state senator. (Second row, left to right) Ethel Lance, 70, and her cousin Susie Jackson, 87; 59-year-old Myra Thompson, wife of a local reverend. (Bottom row, left to right) Tywanza Sanders, 26, who graduated from Allen University last year; retired pastor Daniel Simmons, 45; Charleston County development director DePayne Middleton Doctor, 49.
