Nigerian Doctor in UK accused of Sexual assault after fondling Patient’s Breast

A Nigerian doctor in UK was arraigned in court with charges bordering sexual assault after a female patient accused him stroking her breast and trying to kiss her.

Dr Emmanuel Kanu stroked her breast and repeatedly tried to kiss her, telling her “You want it” when she tried to escape his clutches during the visit.

Dr Emmanuel who graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2003, had just completed GP training and was undergoing specialist training in psychiatry. He was on a locum shift at the A&E department of Darlington Memorial Hospital, County Durham, when the woman who was a divorcee was brought in after trying to take her own life.

According to Daily Mail the unnamed mother of two was still recovering in an emergency ward bed when Dr Emmanuel asked for her mobile number and then rang her when she was discharged five days later to tell her that he “thinking of her”.

Emmanuel then arranged a meeting with the woman at her home, she thought she was appointment was for a medical assessment.

According to the woman’s report, he put his arm around her and stroked her chest.
She told the court that she was "scared, frozen to the spot" and that she was unsure if Emmanuel was really a doctor.

When she resisted his advances and stormed off to her kitchen, the woman said he followed her and tried to. “I can see it in your eyes that you want it,” he told her.
Kanu, who worked at Borders General Hospital, was however acquitted of sexual assault at Durham Crown Court in 2012.

He told the court that he had not molested the patient and claimed “cultural differences” led to the visit on September 3, 2011, saying.

There is a clear divide between the doctor and the patient here, which is very different in Nigeria,” Dr Emmanuel is reported to have told the court.

His excuse was dismissed as not being a “credible explanation” and is actions were branded “deplorable and unprofessional.”
