60 Minutes Breaking Correspondent Bob Simon killed in Manhattan Cab Crash

60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon, pictured left, was killed in a car crash in New York City on Wednesday evening. Simon was traveling in a livery cab that sideswiped a Mercedes-Benz that had come to a stop at a red light on 12th Avenue near West 30th Street around 6:45pm, and then slammed into the median.

The CBS reporter, 73, was unconscious with head and torso injuries when he was rushed to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in the city where he was later pronounced dead.Police on the scene had to cut off the top of the Lincoln to free Simon and the driver.

 
 An emotional Scott Pelley, Simon's CBS colleague, broke the news on air as he fought back tears, pictured inset. Simon is survived by his wife Francoise and daughter Tanya, who was his producer on numerous 60 Minutes segments
 
The driver of the Lincoln, a 44-year-old man, suffered two broken legs and a broken arm and was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he is in stable condition. 




The accident is under investigation. 

The driver of the Mercedes claims the accident was the fault of the livery cab driver. 
 
'He swerved into me,' the driver of the Mercedes told the New York Post
'He hit me and he looked like he lost control of the car.'
