LASU Process to Refund Excess Tuition Fee to Students

The Lagos State University (LASU) in Ojo says processes to refund the difference between its old school fees regime and the new one to students are at advance stage. An official bulletin of the university in Lagos on Saturday said that refunds would be made as soon as funds were released by the state government.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola, had on August 7, reversed tuition fees in the university from N350, 000 for medical students and 197,000 for arts and humanity students to the old rate of N25, 000. The state government also directed refunds to students who had paid the higher fees.

The bulletin said that following the reversal, the university management submitted a request for refund of N843 million to all the affected students. It said that the request had since been reviewed by the Lagos State Ministries Education and Economic Planning and Budget. The bulletin said that the final document would be submitted to the Lagos State Executive Council for final approval.

Meanwhile, Prof. John Obafunwa, the LASU Vice-Chancellor, said some students had suggested that the money should be deducted from the next session payment, but that would not be possible. "Since we have submitted a request for a refund to the state government and it had been approved, it is not possible again for us to deduct the difference from the next session fees," he said.

Obafunwa urged parents and guardians as well the students to exercise patience as the refund would be done as soon as the money was released.
