Haiti’s Health Minister, Florence Duperval Guillaume has been named interim Prime Minister in replacement of former PM, Laurent Lamothe who resigned last week.
Guillaume’s appointment was announced on Sunday, December 21, after Lamothe vacated the office following several weeks of protests in the country.
Protesters took to the streets after accusing the government of corruption and demanded the resignation of both Lamothe and President Michel Martelly but only the former agreed to step down.
The new PM's temporary appointment was disclosed via an e-mail signed by the secretary of the Council of Ministers, Enex Jean-Charles.
Guillaume is a career health worker who has spearheaded efforts to rebuild Haiti’s medical sector, constructing new hospitals, combating a cholera epidemic and providing treatment for HIV-AIDS.
