PayPal sets new world record: raised the Most money online for charity in 24 hours

PayPal has announced that it has been awarded the Guinness World Record for the most money raised online for charity in 24 hours, following a successful campaign in December for #GivingTuesday. It raised $45.8 million for various charities, beating the previous record of $19 million.

This accolade comes alongside news that during the holiday season, more than $857 million was raised through PayPal globally for charities.

On December 1, PayPal teamed up with the 92nd Street Y to see if it could topple the aforementioned world record. In previous years, the company raised $8.6 million in the same timeframe, but obviously trumped that many times over this year. For 24 hours, donations could be made through PayPal to any charity around the world.

If you contributed more than $10 through its Give Cheer website, not only would 100 percent be passed on to the organization, but PayPal added 1 percent more to the amount.

Throughout its month-long holiday campaign, PayPal received donations from 7.24 million people in 183 countries. More than 258,000 charities around the world were supported.
