Oscar Pistorius was released from prison in South Africa Monday and placed under house arrest, Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela said.

The Paralympian star was freed under house arrest a day earlier than planned and is now expected to spend the remainder of his five-year sentence at his uncle's home (pictured below) in Pretoria.

The former Olympic athlete had been in prison since October last year, when a judge sentenced him to five years for culpable homicide in the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. He said he mistook her for an intruder.

It is thought his early release may have been to prevent the media from trying to catch a glimpse of the gold medalist as he was driven away from prison. Pistorius is said to have lost a dramatic amount of weight behind bars.

Last week a South African parole board said it had approved his placement under house arrest and correctional supervision for four years.
The Paralympian star's lawyers successfully argued that he should be released under house arrest after serving a year of his five-year jail sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp (pictured) in 2013
