Professor Wayne Hayes, of the University of California and a visiting scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has developed the Cold Shoulder jacket. He claims it can help people burn an extra 500 calories a day - the equivalent of a Big Mac, two Snickers bars or four slices of bacon. The jacket contains gel packs of ice which, when worn against the back, neck and shoulders, cools the body (pictured left and top right).
This means it has to work harder - and burn more calories - to stay warm (bottom right). It works by 'mild cold exposure', activating the body's 'healthy' brown fat, which unlike 'bad' white fat - amassed from eating too much junk food - burns calories by generating heat.
