This photo on
Sorte Mountain in Venezuela, a woman is lying down performing a healing ritual
where she is possessed for the first time by the spirit of Maria Lionza. Though a
central figure, Maria Lionza is just one spirit in a wide-ranging, eclectic,
and ever-growing pantheon in the Cult of Maria Lionza.
MarĂa
Lionza is the central figure in one of the most widespread indigenous
religions in Venezuela. Her religion is a blend
of African, indigenous, and Catholic beliefs . She is part of a trinity of saints known as the tres potencias or
"three powers".She is revered as a goddess of nature, love, peace, and harmony. She has
followers in many layers of Venezuelan society from small rural villages to the
modern capital of Caracas.
