Capital One: Chelsea lucky to play a 1-1 draw against Liverpool

A spirited Liverpool team had to fight back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Capital One Cup game against Chelsea.

Coach Brendan Rodgers' team were dominant and very unlucky not to have won the match going by the chances that they created in the match. Chelsea went in front in the first half after Emre Can fouled Eden Hazard in the box with the referee calling for a penalty.

Prior to the game much of the build-up was centered on the departing Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, and he came close to scoring when he forced Thibaut Courtois to make a spectacular save.

Liverpool pressed for an equaliser and were duly obliged in the second half when an individual effort from Raheem Sterlling saw him running through Chelsea's defenders and burying it past Courtois for their goal. The goal spurred them as they pressed more for another goal, Gerrard struck the post and Adam Lallana forcing Courtois to a good save.

Overall Liverpool will be happy that they came back in the game, and they will now travel to Stamford Bridge for the return fixtures of matches at least with a fighting chance to progress to the finals.
