Russian Tennis Official Suspended and Fined $25,000 For Calling Serena & Venus "Williams Brothers"
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has suspended and fined President of the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpischev, for calling tennis stars, Serena and Venus "the Williams Brothers."
Tarpischev made the derogatory comment during a Russian late-night show a few weeks ago, calling the sisters the "Williams Brothers." he also said that they are "frightening to look at."
As a result, the WTA suspended him for one year and fined $25,000. The ban will prevent Tarpischev from being involved in all WTA events for the next year. In addition, the association is planning to remove him from the chairmanship of Kremlin cup, the position he has held for almost 20 years.
Serena has spoken out on the issue, stating "I think the WTA did a really job of taking initiative and immediately taking action to his comments. I thought his comments were very insensitive."
